Externships

Gain real-world experience with externship placements in judicial chambers, governmental agencies, and public interest/pro-bono organizations.

Externship Opportunities

The legal externship program allows students to earn up to six credit hours through local or remote externship courses to meet the experiential learning graduation requirements. All externships are unpaid positions within judicial chambers, government agencies, or non-profit organizations.

Any student who has completed at least 45 academic credit hours may participate in an externship. Students eligible for externship under a limited license for specific placement locations must have earned 60 credit hours. Additionally, students must take the Professional Identities Formation course as a prerequisite.

LOCAL EXTERNSHIPS

Local externs are situated within an hour and a half of the Jackson metro area. Students are required to complete 50 placement hours for each credit hour they enroll in. For example, a student participating in a three-credit externship must fulfill 150 hours at the placement site. The local externship course is assessed on a pass/fail basis.

REMOTE EXTERNSHIPS

Remote externs are assigned to placement locations outside of Jackson or more than 1.5 hours away. Students must complete 50 placement hours for each credit hour earned. For example, a student enrolled in a three-credit externship must fulfill 150 hours at the placement site. The remote externship course is graded on a pass/fail basis.

APPLICATION PROCESS FOR STUDENTS

Participation in the externship class requires an application. Students must secure an externship, complete an approval form, and register for the externship class in Banner before the semester begins.
