The Adoption Legal Clinic qualifies for the pro bono hours required of attorneys practicing in Mississippi. Prior knowledge of adoption law is not required; many volunteer lawyers enjoy this experience as their first adoption proceeding.
A student at MC Law will speak with the family and complete a petition for adoption, a final decree of adoption, and all required exhibits.
The law student will secure a court date for the hearing that fits your schedule, and will prepare an entry of appearance for you. The law student will make certain that all documents are correct and available to you at the court hearing. You will also be briefed on all procedures and given the list of questions to present to the Chancellor.
Following the hearing, the law student will make certain the certified report of adoption and exhibits are delivered to the Mississippi Department of Vital Statistics for the issuance of the child’s new birth certificate.
