Forum at Millsaps will tackle tobacco legislation

Medical, legal and public policy experts will participate Jan. 24 in a Spring Business Forum at Millsaps College’s Else School of Management on anti-tobacco legislation.
The forum — “Up in Smoke: Is Anti-Tobacco Legislation Good for Mississippi?”— will open with a breakfast at 7:45 a.m. in the college’s Leggett Center. The program will follow at 8:30 a.m. Tickets are $15, and reservations are recommended. For directions or more information, call (601) 974-1250.
The panel will include Dr. Edward Hill, immediate past president of the American Medical Association; Marty Wiseman, director of the Stennis Institute; Matthew Steffey, a constitutional law expert at the Mississippi College School of Law; and state Sen. Charlie Ross, R-Brandon. They will discuss the issues surrounding tobacco legislation in Mississippi, including the proposed increase in the state’s cigarette tax and the smoking bans recently adopted by many municipalities.
The forum is open to the public. It is sponsored by the Bower Foundation, Mississippi Methodist Rehabilitation Center and the Mississippi State Medical Association.
