  • Placements are made in agencies and offices throughout the Jackson Metropolitan area. Most of the placements are in Criminal Law related areas and the weekly classroom hour covers Criminal Law issues.
  • All externs are placed under the supervision of an attorney. Many of the externs are admitted to practice under the Limited Practice Statutes so that they actually handle cases. You must be able to devote a minimum of ten hours each week to your extern work. It is preferable that your schedule allow for blocks of time so that you can maximize your on-the-job opportunities.
  • Why participate in the Extern Program? It offers excellent experience It gives you legal work experience for your resume It provides networking opportunities while you are still a student It can be helpful in finding a job after law school.
  • There is no examination for the course. The grade is credit/no credit.
  • Contact Prof. West at west@mc.edu for more information.

These placements regularly accept students as externs; however, availability may vary each semester.

In addition, externships are available with trial court judges and appellate judges.  These are handled differently than other placements through the office of Meta Copeland.

"This has been the most rewarding class and program of my law school experience. Not only has it provided me with direction, but it has taught me how to apply it in my personal life and career. The skills I have learned during my externship I will use for the rest of my life."

"The bottom line is 'DO IT!' This is law school taken out of the bottle."
